Understanding Darker Skin Tones

If you have a darker skin tone, you're part of a diverse group that includes individuals of African or African American descent, many Middle Eastern populations, and some South Asian groups from countries like India and Pakistan. People from Hispanic or Latino backgrounds, certain Māori and Pasifika communities, and Southeast Asians also often have medium to dark brown skin tones.

Remember, skin tone is a spectrum, and darker skin encompasses a wide range of shades. The Fitzpatrick scale is how we classify skin tones and Types IV, V, and VI as darker skin tones, but these aren't exclusive categories.

Key Considerations for Darker Skin Tones

When considering scar and stretch mark camouflage, individuals with darker skin tones should be aware of the following:

  • Increased Risk of Hyperpigmentation: Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is more common in darker skin tones. This can lead to darkened patches that may take longer to fade.

  • Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) is a condition where the skin produces excess melanin, leading to darkened patches. It often occurs in response to inflammation or trauma to the skin.

  • Extended Healing Time: Healing takes time, and it may be a bit longer for those with darker skin.

  • Multiple Sessions: To achieve desired results, you might need more treatments than someone with a lighter skin tone, in order to avoid the likelihood of developing PIH.

  • Keloid Scarring: While not exclusive to darker skin, there's a slightly increased risk of keloid scars forming.

  • Individual Variations: Just like fingerprints, everyone's skin is unique. Results can vary, and therefore requires a treatment plan. Results are seen over multiple sessions.

Our Approach to Ensure Optimal Results

We're committed to providing the best care for all skin tones. Here's what we do to ensure your treatment is successful:

  • Thorough Consultations: We'll discuss your skin, medical history, and treatment goals.

  • Patch Tests: We'll perform a patch test to assess your skin's reaction to the pigments.

  • Careful Pigment Selection: We will, 99% of the time start with Inkless (ISR) before considering any Pigment (Ink) treatments. That is to avoid using as much ink as possible. Colour matching is then done with a digital reader to match your skin tone and avoid over-darkening.

  • Detailed Aftercare: We'll provide clear instructions to help you care for your skin during and after treatment.

Remember: While these considerations are important, they don't mean you can't achieve fantastic results. With proper care and realistic expectations, you can confidently embark on your journey to smoother, more even skin.
