Scalp Micropigmentation FAQ's
Clients that are suffering from hair loss have usually tried a number of topical or oral treatments, and some things may have worked, but sometimes not a lot have actually worked. This can be an incredibly stressful and a sensitive time for people and we're here to guide and help find a solution in your hair treatment journey.
What is SMP?
SMP is a fairly new treatment in New Zealand for men and women suffering from hair loss.
For many years people have used medication and expensive hair transplants when dealing with hair loss, but now many are turning towards a more practical solution – tattooing the scalp!
This amazing procedure immediately restores receding hairlines, fixes bald spots, scaring and adds the elusion of fuller thicker hair for both men and women.
Is SMP a non-surgical proceedure?
Yes, Scalp Micropigmentation or commonly referred to as SMP is non-surgical procedure that uses a micro needle to inject pigment in to the epidermal level of the scalp.
Tony dots are tattooed into the scalp creating the illusion of hair follicles.
How is this different from regular tattooing?
Regular tattooing is permanent and delivers pigment deep into the lower skin layers. SMP is a semi-permanent cosmetic procedure and will fade gently and slowly over time depending on your skin type and how you care for it over approximately 3-5 years.
How many treatments does it take?
SMP usually requires 3-4 session each taking between 2 and 4 hours depending on the size of the area being treated.

We space each session out at a min of 7 days (but ideally 2 -4 weeks) so we can build our natural 3D effect. The results will be immediate from your very first session.
How soon will I see a change?
You will see the difference immediately after your first session. The 2nd session is when we can really add some density, and the following treatments is about slowly building the layers.

We use the next sessions to create our special 3D blend and fine tune your overall look, matching the density you require.
Can anyone have SMP?
SMP is suitable for all skin types and stages of hair loss, from completely bald to just thinning or with alopecia or scar patches.

However if your scalp is very dry or the skin is flaky, we will recommend some topical treatments to get the skin in a more healthy condition first, or the pigmentation may not take as well.
Is SMP a non-surgical proceedure?
Yes, Scalp Micropigmentation or commonly referred to as SMP is non-surgical procedure that uses a micro needle to inject pigment in to the epidermal level of the scalp. The procedure is most similar to cosmetic tattooing although the technique is very different.

Does SMP hurt?
SMP is much shallower depth than a regular tatto so the pain is generally considerably less. Most clients describe it as slightly annoying, with some discomfort and a little pricky. Some areas can be more sensitive than other and everyone has their own threshold. Some clients can fall asleep during the SMP procedure.

We can use a numbing gel that can be applied prior and take regular breaks to ensure pain passes. Having a healthy scalp and moisturised prior to the treatment also helps.
Why does it fade?
After the treatment there is fading and a loss of some pigment which occurs during the healing process and this is quite normal. It's the reason we do multiple sessions. Long term fading predominately occurs with sun exposure as with any other tattoo's. Another factor is your immune system which tries to break down the pigment. With good skincare and a good sunblock fading can be minimised.

Do not use products that contain large amounts of alcohol like Rogaine or products that contain Retin-A or Alpha Hydroxy Acid as these can potential fade the SMP pigment.
How do you match my hair colour & skin tone?
All hair colours from fair to red, to black can be replicated using a a quality grey dilute, because all hair appears somewhere on the grey spectrum when shaved. This is how we match to your hair and skin colour tones. We use neutralisers to warm the colour and get a perfect match for everyone.
What pigments do you use?
Our pigments are specifically designed for SMP and scalps. They are designed to settle quickly and last longer. All pigments are sterile medical grade and contain no animal by-products.
How often will I need to shave my head?
Any hairline restoration treatment will need you to shave or clipper your head every 1-3 days to keep you looking 100%! Cleansing and moisturising your scalp daily helps to avoid excess oil build up. A matt sunblock and skin mattifier can help protect and reduce any shine.

If you are only requiring a density treatment, no shaving is required we work around the hair you have. You'll need to ensure its clean, with no products to perform this treatment.
I've already had a hair transplant would I be suitable?
Often we find that SMP works great with existing hair transplants because hair transplants don't add volume. An SMP treatment can be done once the hair is fully healed and growing to increase the illusion of thicker hair.

Because SMP is a cosmetic tattoo procedure, it works really well with most other hair restoration treatments - it's a great way to complement what is already working.

How will SMP help me?
Scalp Micropigmentation can potentially be life changing, by helping to create more self-confidence, a more youthful appearance and overall happiness that can enhance your relationships and improve your social and work life!

It's a cheaper alternative to expensive hair transplants or medication that take a long time to take effect. We find most customers have tried a number of topical or oral treatments before moving to SMP for its immediate benefits.
How much does it cost?
SMP treatment costs vary from client to client. The can start as little as $500 through to full head $3000. It will depend on how much coverage you need to get the desired look you are wanting. Pricing includes 2-4 individual treatment sessions. Each Session is between 2-3 hours long.
